It was letter “O” week and as I was searching for “opera” in the library’s catalogue, I stumbled upon this great find! “Fun at the Opera” written and illustrated by Susanna Goho-Quek shares of an exciting family night at the Chinese Opera.
The elaborate costumes worn by the actors, the colourful makeup and the visually striking performance of acrobatic feats – I could almost find myself among the audience, as I read the story.
I can’t tell you how much Hannah enjoys this story! She requests to read this bilingual picture book each morning she wakes up, before her nap and at bedtime. She had even asked to extend the loan period so that she could enjoy the book a little longer. 🙂
Hannah is absolutely captivated by the magic of Chinese opera. Although she has not seen a live performance, we’ve watched operas on television. She loves the colourful robes, the elaborate headdress and the clashing of cymbals and beating of drums.
“Fun at the Opera” provided a wonderful introduction to the inside scenes of the Chinese opera. Now, my little girl has been asking if she could wear the costumes and put on the makeup. 🙂
